Big Win: Local Cement Manufacturers and DTI Shuts Unfair Trade Practice

Local cement manufacturers applaud the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for bolstering the Philippine manufacturing sector through its recent enforcement action against non-compliant cement importers.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has taken decisive action against unfair trade practices by suspending the permit of Newgate Import Export Corporation for importing non-compliant Blended Hydraulic Cement. This enforcement move, initiated by the Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS), underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring fair competition and quality standards within the cement industry. The suspension follows increased monitoring efforts in Iloilo to curb the influx of substandard imports.

These measures are crucial for the local cement industry, which plays a key role in infrastructure development and economic growth. For years, the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) has raised concerns over excessive and unfairly priced imports that harm local manufacturers. The industry, which contributes significantly to the GDP and provides thousands of jobs, has made substantial investments to meet safety and quality standards, as required by Philippine regulations.

Unregulated imports of low-quality, carbon-intensive cement have disrupted the local market, threatening livelihoods and endangering construction quality. The Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (FTEB) continues to monitor and enforce compliance to maintain a level playing field. CeMAP praised the DTI’s actions, recognizing the importance of these efforts in protecting the integrity of the construction sector.

As the country’s economy recovers post-pandemic, a strong local cement industry is essential for supporting infrastructure projects. By ensuring fair trade and compliance, the DTI and local manufacturers work together toward a resilient and self-sufficient Philippines, committed to delivering high-quality construction materials for national development.
