MSD for Mothers and Jhpiego are working together to improve maternal health care in Sorsogon, addressing preventable maternal deaths and complications. With maternal mortality still a significant global issue, particularly in low-income countries, the initiative focuses on providing better access to skilled health professionals. In Sorsogon, a province previously experiencing high maternal mortality, a program supported by MSD for Mothers has made notable strides in improving emergency care for mothers, reducing preventable deaths from issues like hemorrhage, hypertension, and eclampsia.
A key aspect of the project is the development of a strong referral system across 18 health facilities in Sorsogon. By strengthening communication and emergency response protocols, Jhpiego has helped reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. A notable example is the case of Nanay Nancy Gardon, who survived a rare childbirth complication due to the quick coordination between health units and the timely transfer to specialized care. This system ensures that mothers in remote areas receive critical care in emergencies, significantly improving survival rates.
Under the MSD for Mothers grant, over 300 health providers were trained in emergency obstetric and neonatal care, enhancing their ability to manage high-risk pregnancies and complications. The initiative also produced a local reference manual for managing high-risk pregnancies, contributing to the province’s ongoing healthcare reform. With continued support, MSD and Jhpiego aim to empower local healthcare providers and ensure sustainable improvements in maternal health, improving outcomes for women and families in Sorsogon.
