In celebration of Heart Month of February, Organon Philippines hosted the “Heart 2 Heart Talk on Optimal Cholesterol Control,” aimed at raising awareness about managing Dyslipidemia and preventing the long-term effects of high cholesterol. The event featured renowned lipid experts Dr. Pipin Kojodjojo, a cardiologist and electrophysiologist from Singapore, and Dr. Louella Santos, President of the Philippine Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society (PLAS). They shared valuable research and practical advice to help Filipinos better manage cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Dyslipidemia, which refers to unhealthy cholesterol levels, can lead to the buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries, obstructing blood flow and increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other severe complications. Statistics reveal that heart disease is responsible for over 120,000 deaths annually in the Philippines, making it the leading cause of death. Alarmingly, millions of Filipinos, even as young as 20 years old, are unaware they have high cholesterol, increasing their risk of heart disease. A study from the 8th National Nutrition Survey showed that 1 in 2 Filipinos have borderline high cholesterol, posing a hidden public health threat.
Chronic stress, poor lifestyle habits, and inactivity contribute to high cholesterol levels, especially among young adults. Dyslipidemia often shows no symptoms, leaving many unaware of the damage building up in their arteries. To combat this, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking are crucial. In some cases, medication may be necessary to manage cholesterol levels effectively. Statins, PCSK9 inhibitors, and other cholesterol-lowering drugs can help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), lower triglycerides, and increase good cholesterol (HDL).
Dr. Kojodjojo emphasized the importance of consistent medication adherence for effective cholesterol management and long-term heart health. Organon Philippines remains committed to educating the public about Dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases, empowering individuals to take proactive steps to protect their heart health.
Remember: Every case of heart disease is different. Talk to your doctor to get the treatment and care you deserve. Staying faithful to your medication routine could save you and help you live a more fulfilling life free from complications.
